Thursday 8th March Afternoon - Tronheim Kommune Apprenticeships
Trondheim Town Hall

A long apprenticeship is the most logical way to success. The only alternative is overnight stardom, but I can't give you a formula for that. Chet Atkins

Trondheim Town Hall

We arrived at Trondheim Town Hall and were treated to two presentations.

The first was by a staff member of Trondheim Kommune which is like a County Council eg DLRCOCO.

And she informed us of how Trondheim Kommune Apprenticeship worked.

There were two types of Apprenticeships
Healthcare  and Youth development

2 year programme - signed contract.

17-18 year olds were taken in - straight from studying healthcare in e.g. Orkal or KVT.

In all there were 400 apprenticeships employed by Trondheim Commune- take in 200 per year on a two year programme

Required to get on the apprenticeships are

  • Good grades
  • Good attendance
  • References
  • Interview - group interviews - demonstrate teamwork - can they include others

The apprenticeship is part of the CSR
Corporate Social Responsibility - outreach by the Kommune.

Trondheim Kommune - has a CSR for all the youth in the city. So has to provide placements for youths from disadvantage - maybe with more supports.

TK has partnership with 4 highschool - get to know the students in advance.

There are 200 municipal placement centres who have staff who have been trained to work with apprentices.

Each company has several Supervisors who have to attend a 4 day course

Apprentices have the same rights as other staff.

Initially they work closely with the supervisor.

They also have online training and have to submit assignments online

Joachim and Corrina TK staff members worked in Human Resources looking after recruiting all the apprentices. The staff member Joachim explained he could have 30/40 apprentices assigned to him and part of his reponsibility is to ensure their documentation is fulfilled

Students have 1 hour a day to write up their work.  They work for 37 hours a week e.g. 32 hour week and 5 hours to study.

They earn typically 16,000 euros in 2nd year

After the 2 years they will receive a Qualification to work in youth club childcare.

There is an emphasis on Attendance loyalty confidentiality and work ethics

Students would therefore have spent in total 5 years working on their qualification

3 years in Orkdal and 2 years as an apprentice.
Do they get jobs after the apprenticeship we asked - The best get jobs
Others may start with part time work Joachim replied.
