Explaining the nursing course

Discussion on the nursing course.

Class in Nursing Theory & Practice

Teresa is a Working nurse – She works in cardiac care at Tallaght Hospital in addition to her teaching.

The class topic was in nursing assessment, Looking at planning for patient care.

  • Teresa has written on the white board that it was World COPD day and brought many discussions back to this fact.
  • Teresa used a scenario/patient in order to apply the concepts in the  Nursing care plan.
  • Good use of questioning throughout.
  • Actual professional paperwork from Tallaght Hospital was used.
  • Teresa made great use of magic white board.  Writing on white board and appears on the PC - teacher notes of what has been continued.  I noted that the page in the board moves up - another great use of the board.
  • I was surprised to see such a large international student cohort in this class in South West Dublin, much different from the cultural mix in Blackrock South Dublin location where I teach.   The students were very welcoming and friendly and interested in their subject.

Teresa had a fantastic demonstration of a pulse oximeter which she showed the student how to use and then allowed them to take their own readings.  This was very popular with the students,
All students were able to take their own blood oxygen saturation levels e.g. Normal rate is 100% 80% is
Again Teresa had amazing subject knowledge as a practicing nurse. Facts I learned from Teresa

  • COPD - Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Breathing difficulties - breathing hard  dyspnoea
  • Cough 3 Ps - persistent productive - sputum, purulent - discharge coughing thick green tenacious.
Teresa gave us a tour of the Nursing Course facilities at Greenhills which was very impressive.

My reflection on this was that again Teresa has such great specialist knowledge and like Mary a great enthusiasm for her area, the class were very friendly and great interaction throughout.
