Nutrition Class - Wednesday 15th

Work Shadowing with Mary Mc Mahon with her nutrition class
Healthcare.

The topic was the 3 sources of lipids, the topic well introduced by Mary.

Mary made great use of power point and the white board
There was a good Class discussion
The class watch a video and then the class did a think pair share  on what they learnt from it, facilitated by the teacher, this was an excellent approach to this activity as I always worry that watching a video is a very passive activity.  I use "think, pair, share" myself in class but have not used it for videos like this.  Mary then distributed a revision activity handout to conclude the class.

My reflection on this shadowing was that this was great student teacher interaction.  Mary has fabulous subject knowledge and is really enthusiastic about her subject.

Mary Mc Mahon with students

I learnt so many facts from Mary :-)

  • Portion size - enough to fit into the palm of your hand
  • 80% of your brain is fat
  • Good fats have  a good effect on dementia.
  • I learned there are 3 sources of lipids - Animal/Plant/Marine

From a fascinating discussion on Lipids.

In Greenhills which is a dual provision school, with a separate building for FE, there are 40 minute classes and I did wonder that maybe students are better able to concentrate at this time length.
Mary shared her list of teaching strategies wwhich are included in an impressive teachers diary provided by Greenhills Management.
